Assam Floods: Over 10 Lakh Livestock Affected, Govt Steps Up Relief Efforts
The devastating floods in Assam have severely impacted not only human lives but also livestock and wildlife , with over 10 lakh livestock affected and hundreds of wild animals reportedly swept away, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on August 6. Highlighting the lesser-discussed impact of the flood disaster, Sarma said the loss and distress faced by animals remain one of the most serious consequences of the ongoing crisis. In a social media post, he stated that while large-scale attention is usually focused on human suffering, the impact on animals requires equal recognition . “Over 10 lakh livestock have been affected, hundreds of wild animals have been swept away, and many more remain stranded or missing,” Sarma said, underlining the magnitude of the situation. The Assam Forest Department has been carrying out extensive rescue and relief operations to save stranded wildlife and provide assistance to affected animals. However, the Chief Minister acknowledged that the scale of the crisis poses a major challenge for rescue teams working across flood-hit regions. Sarma also pointed out that animal rescue efforts during natural disasters often receive limited attention despite the difficulties involved. He called for greater awareness and appreciation of initiatives aimed at protecting wildlife and livestock during emergencies. The floods have caused widespread destruction across Assam this year, claiming at least 95 human lives and affecting more than 1.6 lakh people in several districts. With rivers overflowing and large areas submerged, authorities continue to focus on relief operations, rehabilitation measures, and rescue efforts for both affected communities and animals. Assam: CID Targets Fraud in Flood Relief Collection, UPI Accounts Under Probe
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Assam has launched a major crackdown against fraudulent activities carried out in the name of flood relief, stepping up surveillance on individuals and groups allegedly misusing the crisis to collect money illegally. According to sources, the state’s crime branch is maintaining strict vigilance over unauthorised fundraising, particularly cases where money is being collected under the pretext of providing aid to flood-affected people. Multiple bank accounts linked to digital payment platforms such as UPI and QR codes have been brought under investigation to trace suspicious transactions and prevent misuse of public donations. The CID will specifically examine bank accounts linked to UPI and QR code-based transactions used for collecting donations . Authorities are focusing on tracking digital payment trails to identify misuse of funds and ensure accountability. Nearly 40 such accounts involved in relief collection activities have already come under the watch of the cyber cell, indicating the scale of the crackdown. In addition, Assam Police has issued a special advisory to content creators, urging them to exercise caution while sharing images or videos related to flood victims. Particular emphasis has been placed on protecting the identity of children affected by floods. Authorities have strictly warned against revealing the identity of minor victims, stating that such actions could lead to cybercrime risks and legal consequences.
