Assam Floods: Akhil Gogoi Writes to CM, Seeks CBI Probe, Removal of Minister Sushanta Borgohain
Assam: Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has written an open letter to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma , seeking immediate relief, enhanced compensation and a high-level CBI probe into the circumstances surrounding the devastating July 19 floods in Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat. In his letter dated September 18, 2026, Gogoi said thousands of families across the three districts had suffered extensive losses, including damage to houses, livestock, agricultural produce, vehicles, household belongings and livelihoods. He urged the Chief Minister to personally visit the worst-affected areas, particularly in Sivasagar and Nazira, and interact with affected residents. Gogoi sought Rs 15,000 in immediate assistance for every affected family that has not yet received flood relief, besides ensuring the promised additional Rs 10,000 assistance for families in Sivasagar and Charaideo before September 23. He also demanded revision of the existing compensation manual and a minimum Rs 10 lakh rehabilitation package for families based on a proper damage assessment. He sought compensation for damaged vehicles, betel nut, black pepper and agarwood plantations, small tea gardens, livestock, poultry, pigs, goats and fisheries. For damaged commercial establishments, he demanded assistance of up to Rs 10 lakh from the CM/PM Relief Fund. The MLA alleged that the scale of the disaster was linked not only to flooding but also to factors including illegal coal mining in Nagaland, stone mining along the Dikhow, inadequate embankments and failures in disaster management. He named Water Resources Minister Sushanta Borgohain , MLA Mayur Borgohain and MLA Dharmeswar Konwar in connection with his allegations. Gogoi demanded a high-level CBI investigation into alleged corruption and called for the removal of Sushanta Borgohain from the Cabinet, while seeking that Mayur Borgohain and Dharmeswar Konwar also be brought within the scope of the probe. Assam: TYPA Protests in Sivasagar Over Pending Flood Relief, Rehabilitation
Members of the Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad Assam ( TYPA) staged a protest in Sivasagar on Thursday, demanding immediate compensation and rehabilitation for families affected by the devastating floods in July. Carrying black flags and pieces of black cloth, hundreds of TYPA members and office-bearers took part in the demonstration. The protesters raised slogans demanding that flood-affected families receive the compensation due to them. The protesters alleged that many families affected by the July floods are yet to receive the one-time assistance of Rs 15,000 announced for flood-hit families. They also demanded that proper rehabilitation measures be taken for those who suffered losses in the floods. During the protest, slogans such as “Provide proper compensation to flood-affected families”, “Down with the inefficient district administration” and “Long live TYPA ” were raised, creating a tense atmosphere in the area. The organisation also raised concerns over illegal coal mining and stone quarrying, demanding that such activities be stopped immediately. Another key demand was the announcement of a special package of Rs 5,000 crore for Sivasagar and Charaideo districts to support flood-affected people and address the broader impact of the disaster. The protestors urged the government and district administration to act swiftly on their demands and ensure that flood-affected families receive the assistance and rehabilitation support promised to them.
